Rothshank Pottery

Goshen, Indiana

Justin Rothshank makes handmade ceramic mugs and artisan pottery that make you look twice. At first glance: a beautifully thrown earthenware piece with a lustrous, layered surface. Look closer: a hummingbird. A wildflower. A field of poppies. All of it fired onto the clay using custom decals that Justin designs and prints himself in his studio in Goshen, Indiana.

These are unique ceramic gifts with something genuinely to say — and they've been recognized for it. Justin has been featured in Ceramics Monthly, honored by the American Craft Council, and his work is part of the permanent collection at the D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield, Massachusetts. He built his studio and wood kiln by hand on 20 acres of wooded Indiana land, and fires some pieces using wood he harvests himself from that same land.

We've carried Justin's work at Pinch for years because it does something most pottery gifts don't: it stops people in their tracks. His handmade mugs are functional, dishwasher safe, and built to last — but they're also miniature works of art. Collectors find them. So do people who just want a really beautiful mug to drink their coffee from every morning.

If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind pottery gift — for yourself or someone who has everything — Justin's work is one of our most heartfelt recommendations. Each piece is made one at a time, and no two are ever identical.
