Meet the Artist: Alyssa Sirani
Alyssa Sirani is a ceramicist who specializes in small-batch, hand-painted stoneware and is based in both Northampton, MA, and New York's Hudson Valley, where she was born and raised.
Alyssa studied Arts Management at Purchase College with the intention of working in nonprofit arts education. She never planned on turning her own art into a career until she began sharing her work on Instagram. Eventually, after building a following there, and with the mentorship of the instructors and owner of Northampton Pottery, she took the leap to pursue pottery full-time.
Alyssa both hand-builds and throws, depending on the form, and loves hand building for its more intimate feel. She often paints on greenware (unfired pottery that has been shaped and dried but has not yet been put into the kiln), then uses a blade to scrape away layers of color — subtracting rather than adding — to create highlights, texture, and depth in the details.
