Spencer Peterman.
We're so excited to be highlighting Spencer's gold-standard work this month. Spencer and his wife, Michelle, (pictured above) were oh so welcoming to us during our studio visit, where we not only got to appreciate their incredible showroom during peak foliage, but also got to take a look behind the scenes into their making process. Perhaps you've seen their showroom, or at least driven by it. It's right on Route 2, past the turn off for Turners Falls and a couple doors down from The Wagon Wheel (💖). Incredible enticing, their studio is a warm, brick red cottage with big wooden bowls displays along the front of the house and through the lawn, with an old-timey, wooden wagon sitting alongside the house, display more of their work.
We've been working with Peterman Boards for... ever? Well, at least since 2007. Close to 20 years later and our partnership and appreciation for them has only grown.
Spencer is supplied by local tree services for the majority of their wood. This gives these local businesses an opportunity to offload these trees that would otherwise have little value in the logging industry. Through the years, Spencer has also spread the wood that he will purchase older or diseased trees to make into beautiful, functional art instead of being discarded, burned, or used for wood chips. He and his team work with black walnut, cherry, oak, and maple. They look for hidden potential: the dramatic patterns of spalted maple or the rich warmth of cherry. Some of the most prized pieces come from trees touched by weather, fungus, or insects—nature’s unexpected artistry.
Spencer embrace the imperfections of the wood. Knots, spalting, and burls are what make each piece unique and magical. In the unique grain of each finished piece, you can see the tree’s history—its growth, its struggles, and its resilience.
Each bowl and board is rooted in sustainability, shaped by hand, and made to last for generations. When you bring a Peterman piece into your home, you’re not just getting a bowl or board. You’re holding a piece of history, rescued from the forest floor, and given new life with care.
